The Walkervilles - "Please Baby Stay" 2013
Michou - "Growing Younger" 2010
Born and raised a riverbank away from the birthplace of Motown, prolific Canadian singer-songwriter Soul Brother Mike has a lifetime of immersion in classic soul and R&B music. With over a decade of experience crafting and performing intelligent, compelling songs, Mike continues to re-define the sound of Canadian independent music.
Formerly the songwriting machine and singer of indie/pop group Michou and the creative force behind soul/rock band The Walkervilles, Mike has worked with Grammy award-winning producer Gordon Williams (Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill) in New York City, producer Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) at Willie Nelson's Arlyn Studios in Austin, Texas, and with producer Eric Ratz (Metric) in Toronto at Vespa Studio. His list of past performances is a thousand entries long, including dates at Rifflandia, CNE, PNE, Hillside and venues like Massey Hall, The Highline Ballroom (New York CIty), and The Vogue Theatre (Montreal).
He's shared the stage with Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dashboard Confessional, Stanley Clark, Lights, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Bettye LaVette, Laura Mvula, The Sheepdogs, The Arkells, The Weakerthans, Sloan, Big Sugar and Sam Roberts Band.
The proof of Mike's songwriting ability is in the accolades and awards garnered through the years, be it charting on the Top 100 in Canadian Rock Radio, seeing two of his songs chart at #1 in the MuchMore Music Top Countdown (The Walkervilles' "Please Baby Stay" in 2013, and Michou's "Growing Younger" in 2010), or earning the title of XM Radio The Verge's Artist of the Year in 2011 with Michou. He has written the theme song for CBC Radio's Windsor Morning ('What Kind Of Fool'), and released no less than a dozen albums and EPs of original music.
Mike's solo career began with the release of his debut album 'Off Mike' in 2015, revealing his unique creative vision, with influences ranging from Nina Simone and Solomon Burke to Lewis Taylor and Sidibe.
A second album "Learn To Vibe" in May 2017, was the first album to be widely distributed on major streaming platforms by Mike. This was followed by a winter-time release that same year titled "Soulstice". Mike then had his first child with his wife Crissi Cochrane, moved into a new home and began building a basement studio. He was also forming a new band called The Family Soul. In 2019, Mike produced a new album for Crissi Cochrane titled "Heirloom", and an album of cover songs for The Family Soul titled "On The Shoulders Of... Vol. 1".
In 2020, Soul Brother Mike is focusing on creating singles as a solo artist, short releases for The Family Soul, and managing a new music label, Soul City Music Co-Op, to connect and empower a small group of Windsor singer-songwriters. Mike also began hosting free live-stream concerts on Facebook Live (SoulCityTV), and began hosting a weekly live radio show on Facebook Live (Radio Hour).
